“The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.”
Bahá’u’lláh
We are the Stockport Bahá’ís — a welcoming group of unique individuals devoted to building vibrant communities. Located right next door to Manchester, home to one of the oldest Bahá’í communities in the UK, our group has grown and changed with Stockport itself.
We all come from different backgrounds and walks of life, but we’ve all been brought together by our love of the Bahá’í teachings and our aspirations for a bright future for humanity.
The Stockport Bahá’í assembly traces its roots back to individuals and families who moved into the Cheadle area, mainly from Manchester, to share Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings and message of hope. In 1959, the small Cheadle community grew large enough to become the local spiritual assembly for Cheadle and Gatley urban district council. Thirteen years later when the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport was created, the assembly’s title and focus expanded beyond Cheadle and Gatley to include the wider Stockport community.
Since then, the Stockport local spiritual assembly has worked to heal divisions in society by working with other local religious organisations to found the Stockport Interfaith group. Our community has also offered commemorations and devotionals during some of the most trying times in Greater Manchester’s history and supports visitors, newcomers and long-time residents to leave their community in better shape than they found it.
